Accent Intelligence is a collection of audio recordings in which Katie Pelikan Baselj explores the impact of machine learning on the everyday use of voice recognition technology. In six chapters, Pelikan Baselj takes a closer look at governmental and industry related implementations and reveals the sources of inherit bias of voice recognition. She explains the business models inherent to voice-controlled home automation devices such as Apple’s Siri, Amazon’s Alexa and Google’s Home. Ultimately, Pelikan Baselj advocates for a culture of dynamic ‘accent chameleons’ that represent a fuller and more accurate soundscape of human voice.

Accent Intelligence is een verzameling audio-opnamen waarin Katie Pelikan Baselj de impact van machinaal leren op het dagelijkse gebruik van spraakherkenningstechnologie onderzoekt. In zes hoofdstukken gaat Pelikan Baselj dieper in op overheids- en branchegerelateerde toepassingen en onthult ze de vooroordelen die aan de basis staan van stemherkenning. Ook zet ze de bedrijfsmodellen uiteen die inherent zijn aan spraakgestuurde apparaten zoals Siri van Apple, Alexa van Amazon en Google Home. Ten slotte pleit Pelikan Baselj voor een cultuur van dynamische ‘accentkameleons’ die een volledigere en nauwkeurigere soundscape van de menselijke stem vertegenwoordigen.
